Born from research developed during the GlogauAir Berlin 2024 Residency, this series explores the complexity of female identity in tension with social norms and technological advancement. Using her own worn clothing as primary material — garments charged with lived experience — Englebert builds a visual language that probes the layers of social conditioning and subjectivity that shape the contemporary female psyche.
Through a gesture of translation, the artist converts her genetic sequencing into a system of perforations, reactivating the device of the Jacquard loom (19th century), considered the first precedent of modern programming. There are 23 Jacquard cards, each containing information from one of her 23 chromosomes.
This procedure establishes a parallel between biological code and computer code: both function as repertoires of instructions that determine patterns, whether in textile, machine, or body. By transcribing her DNA onto punched cards, Englebert proposes a tangible materialization of the genome as score and program, making visible the algorithmic condition of life.
The work operates as a critical reflection on the self-construction of identity in the biotechnological era. The cards, which originally represented an industrial device for standardizing and replicating textile designs, here become a personal and biographical archive: bodily fragments transformed into a mechanical support. The tension between the intimate and the impersonal, between genetic singularity and the logic of repetition, articulates a discourse on the way technology translates, administers, and reconfigures the notion of the subject.
